PETRIFIED FOREST
Cataclysmic volcanic eruption offering a nice walk to discover the trees of the redwood forest transformed into stone
A cataclysmic volcanic eruption took place here 3 million years ago. Silica-rich ash covered the redwood forest below, and all the trees fell in the same direction: this is the largest petrified forest in the world. The silica facilitated the preservation of the structure, gradually replaced the plant matter and fossilized the trunks. The trees, or rather the stumps of trees become stones, were discovered in 1870 because of the erosion which released them from the ground. The spectacle is amazing, a nice walk to make.
