This commercial building, built in 1852, has been classified as a historic monument for its western terminus of the Pony Express company
This commercial building, built in 1852 in the Old Sacramento district, was designated a historic monument in 1966 for its western terminus, inherited from the Pony Express company. Its architecture is typical of the Gold Rush era, with its multi-storey brick buildings and large French windows. It is part of Sacramento's historic park. The historic building once housed the California Supreme Court. It is now home to the city's tourism office and a branch of the Wells Fargo Museum in San Francisco. It features period artifacts, including a stagecoach.
The Pony Express has fascinated a whole generation through its history. The company pledged to transport the mail in 10 days, using relay stations for horses and experienced riders. It operated for just 19 months, from April 1860 to October 1861, as it was not very profitable and was soon replaced by the telegraph. Nevertheless, it became a legend in the history of the western United States.
The statue of the Pony Express honors its fascinating history, which once enabled courageous riders to communicate vital information in a short space of time. Riders changed horses at each station, as their galloping endurance could only cover a few kilometers. Riders took very few breaks to refuel and sleep. Horses could travel up to 40 km per hour.
