COUVENT SAINT-JOSEPH
Former Catholic convent founded by French nuns. Now home to a Maronite parish and a medical school.
This former Catholic convent (Καθολική Μονή του Άγιου Ιωσήφ/Katholiki Moni tou Agiou Iosif, St. Joseph's Convent) was the city's first hospital. It was founded in 1844 by French nuns from the congregation of Saint-Joseph-de-l'Apparition and operated until 1932, while a French-speaking school remained here until 2008. Today, the elegant building houses a Maronite parish and a medical school. Opposite the entrance, a monument dating from 1895 pays tribute to the nun Sophie Chambon (1847-1894), who cared for thousands of inhabitants.
