KAMARES AQUEDUCT
Part of the aqueduct that supplied water to Larnaka. Considered the largest Ottoman project in Cyprus.
This portion of Ottoman aqueduct (Υδραγωγείο Καμάρων/Ydragogio Kamaron) extends 200 m along the B5 expressway with a series of 33 arches. Also known as the Bekir Aqueduct, the entire structure (75 arches) was built with stones from ancient Kition from 1747 to 1750 at the instigation of the island's governor Bekir Pasha (1670-1757). It allowed to supply water to Larnaka by diverting the Tremithos River, before being abandoned in 1939. Considered to be the largest Ottoman project in Cyprus, the work may have been built on the basis of a Roman aqueduct.
