MAKRONISSOS GRAVES
On the Makronissos peninsula, an archaeological site with 19 rock-cut tombs from the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
This archaeological site (Αρχαίοι Τάφοι Μακρόνησου/Archaiï Tafi Makronisou) lies on the pretty Makronissos peninsula, which is bordered by two popular beaches. Excavated since 1989, it features 19 tombs dug into the rock during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Although the site is reminiscent of the Tombs of the Kings in Paphos, it is less well preserved, having been plundered and used as a stone quarry in the 19thcentury . A series of steps leads up to rectangular cavities where local inhabitants used to deposit sarcophagi.
