Limassol, also known as Lemessos, is Cyprus' main port and boasts the island's largest seaside resort. Built between the two ancient towns of Amathounta and Kourion and surrounded by the wine-growing villages of Troodos, Limassol has been known to traders for its wine and sugar cane since the Middle Ages. Today, with a population of 135,000, it is Cyprus' second largest city and a major center of commerce and tourism. The locals are renowned for their lively character and the vacation atmosphere in the city is absolutely carefree, which explains why numerous festivals and carnivals take place every year during the summer months. Limassol's stores offer products ranging from the ultra-modern to the traditional and artisanal. St Andrews Street, close to the promenade, offers the best souvenirs in town. Other sights include Limassol Castle, near the old port, where Richard the Lionheart is said to have married Queen Berengaria of Navarre in 1911 and crowned her Queen of England. If you're interested in history, why not visit the Folk Art Museum or the Archaeological Museum, both of which feature interesting displays of pottery and tombstones among their many exhibits. Alternatively, if you prefer outdoor activities, you can easily take the kids to the municipal garden to see the zoo animals and have fun in the playground!
