Cyprus' biggest carnival, 50 days before Orthodox Easter, between mid-February and mid-March. Limassol comes alive for ten days.
This carnival (Καρναβάλι Λεμεσού/Karnavali Lemesou) is held in Cyprus' second most populous city on a variable date, fifty days before Orthodox Easter, between mid-February and mid-March. It's the country's biggest and lasts ten days. Around 50,000 people attend the big costume parade on Makarios-III Avenue on the first Sunday. This is followed by city-wide parties, DJs and concerts... Organized since 1890, Carnival has its roots in ancient celebrations in honor of Dionysus.
