REMAINS OF CHALENCON CASTLE
A strategic place of passage and trade, with a round keep surrounded by a square enclosure and a chapel.
In the Middle Ages, Chalencon was a strategic place of passage and trade between Velay and Forez. A powerful fortress was built in the 10th century to control this passage. A real eagle's nest, built on a rocky outcrop, the castle dominated the gorges of the Ance. Today stands a round keep surrounded by a square enclosure and a chapel of the 10th and 11th centuries. On the ramparts one can still see the remains of the old gate. The castle is private.
