ANCIENT KURION STAGE
The only ancient stadium to be seen in Cyprus. It belonged to the city-state of Kourion. 187-m-long track for eight runners.
This archaeological site (Kourion Stadium, Στάδιο Κουρίου/Stadiou Kouriou) is home to the only ancient stadium visible in Cyprus. It belonged to the city-state of Kourion and was rebuilt during the Roman period, in the 2ndcentury AD, to accommodate 6,000 spectators in an enclosure 229 m long and 24 m wide. The track stretches 187 m in length, with room for eight runners. Several events were held here (stadium race, pentathlon, chariot race, etc.) during games in honor of Apollo Hylates.
