HAYDARPAŞA MOSQUE
Former Catholic church of Sainte-Catherine, converted into a mosque in 1570. Exhibition space. Many Gothic elements.
This mosque (Haydarpaşa Camii, Haydarpasha Mosque) was founded in 1570 within the walls of the 14th-century Catholic Church of St. Catherine. It serves as an exhibition space. Apart from the minaret and buttresses, the building retains its original appearance: a two-bay nave, a forest of ribbed vaults, gargoyles, high openings and rich exterior ornamentation (dragons, corbels, floral motifs, etc.). The faces on the south portal have been hammered out, as has that of the fairy Mélusine, on a console in the archivolt of the north portal.
