Former Catholic church converted into a mosque by Ottoman general Lala Mustafa Pasha in 1570/1571.

This vast 50 m-long Gothic edifice (Τέμενος Ομεριέ/Temenos Omerie, Ömeriye Camii) is the former Catholic church of St. Mary of the Augustinian convent, founded around 1330. It was converted into a mosque and fitted with a minaret (35 m) by Ottoman general Lala Mustafa Pasha, conqueror of Cyprus in 1570-1571. He dedicated it to Omar, caliph and friend of the Prophet Mohammed, who, according to the belief of the time, stopped off in Nicosia after taking Jerusalem in 637. Reopened for worship in 2010, the mosque is mainly attended by non-Cypriot worshippers.
