ARABAHMET MOSQUE
Superb late domed mosque. The pavement preserves fragments of the tombstones of Christian nobles.
This beautiful mosque (Arabahmet Camii) is surrounded by a garden and a small cemetery. Giving its name to the Arabahmet district, it is one of the few domed mosques in the country. Built at the end of the 16th century on the site of a church, it was named in honor of Arab Ahmet Pasha, Ottoman governor of Rhodes who took part in the conquest of Cyprus in 1570-1571. The pavement preserves fragments of Christian tombstones. Among the inscriptions are the names and years of death of members of the great Frankish and Venetian families.
