KORNESIOS HOUSE
A superb Ottoman-style mansion built in 1793 for the powerful Greek Cypriot Chatzigeorgakis Kornesios.
This bourgeois house (Οικία Χατζηγεωργάκη Κορνέσιου/Ikia Chatzigeorgaki Kornesiou) is one of Nicosia's best-preserved18th-century buildings. Ottoman in style, it comprises three floors, a courtyard with garden and a corbelled overhang on the street. It was built in 1793 for Chatzigeorgakis Kornesios, a powerful Greek Cypriot who was a drogman, i.e. an official interpreter and mediator between the Ottoman authorities and the Orthodox community. His wealth made him the envy of many: Kornesios was the victim of a plot and executed in 1809.
