FREEDOM MONUMENT
Monument designed by Greek sculptor Ioannis Notaras, built in 1973 on the Podocataro bastion of the Venetian fortifications.
This 10-meter-high monument (Μνημείο Ελευθερίας/Mnimio Eleftherias) is installed on the Podocataro bastion of the Venetian fortifications. In a rather bland realist style, the work of Greek sculptor Ioannis Notaras (1907-2001) was erected in 1973 to commemorate the war of independence against the British (1955-1959). Composed of a white marble base and 14 bronze statues, the monument represents Freedom surrounded by two militants of the National Organization of Cypriot Fighters (EOKA) opening the door of a prison to the Cypriot people.
