FAMAGUSTA DOOR
Built in 1567-1568, this fortified gate is the most imposing of the three openings in Nicosia's Venetian walls.
This fortified gate (Πύλη Αμμοχώστου/Pyli Ammochostou) is the most imposing of the three openings in Nicosia's Venetian walls. It was built in 1567-1568 and named Porta Giuliana in honor of its designer, the architect Giulio Savorgnano, who also supervised the fortifications of Heraklion, Crete. A pedestrian tunnel connects the moat, with an 11-meter-diameter dome in the center that lets in the light. On either side, the former guardrooms house municipal exhibition and reception areas.
