AGIOS ANDREAS DISTRICT
Neighborhood along the Paphos Gate, once home to Greek, Turkish, Armenian, Latin and Maronite Cypriots.
Once known for its tanners, the Agios Andreas district (Ενορία ΄Αγιος Ανδρέας) is located along the Paphos Gate and extends between the Tripoli bastion and the "green line". It is the former "Arsenal" district (Mahallesi Tophane, in Turkish) which owes its name to the powder magazine installed by the Ottomans in the Kastelliotissa, a vestige of a Lusignan palace. Until the middle of the 20th century, Greek, Turkish, Armenian, Latin and Maronite Cypriots lived together in this district. Today it is mainly populated by inhabitants of Orthodox culture
