SAMANBAHÇE DISTRICT
A pretty residential estate built between 1917 and 1925 to house Nicosia's poorest Muslim inhabitants.
This residential estate (Samanbahçe Evleri) was built between 1917 and 1925 on the initiative of the Evkaf of Cyprus (Islamic religious fund) to house the city's poorest Muslim inhabitants. Comprising 72 single-storey 85 m² houses, it stands on the site of a former garden belonging to a wealthy landowner named Şaban Paşa. Recently restored, this elegant "HLM" complex is well worth a stroll through its lined alleys bearing the names of figures from the history of the Turkish Cypriot community. No shops or cafés.
