CHURCH OF THE ARCHANGEL-MICHAEL IN KYRENIA
Greek Orthodox church completed in 1875. Closed to worship and transformed into a museum of icons, it is no longer open to visitors.
This Greek Orthodox church (Başmelek Mikail Kilisesi, Ιερός Ναός Αρχαγγέλου Μιχαήλ/Ieros Naos Archangelou Michail) dominates the western part of the Old Port. Built between 1856 and 1875, it has been dedicated to Kyrenia's patron saint since the Byzantine period. Closed to worship, since 1991 it has housed the "Museum of Icons" (Girne İkon Müzesi), with some 50 icons from the 18th and 20th centuries from churches in the region. But the building has been closed to visitors since 2019.
