BALDÖKEN CEMETERY
Dating back to Roman times, this cemetery was used by the Ottomans to bury their soldiers after the city was taken.
A small island of greenery in the middle of the city, this cemetery (Baldöken Mezarlığı) dates back to Roman times. It was used by the Ottomans to bury their soldiers after the capture of the city in 1570. Reserved for the military until the 17th century, it was transformed into a civilian cemetery, then partly occupied by urban development. A few steles, a fountain and the domed turbe remain from the Ottoman period. On the way down to the castle and the Old Port, we pass by the small Anglican church of St. Andrew, erected in 1913.
