HAZRETI-OMER MAUSOLEUM
Mausoleum built around 1571 housing the sarcophagi of seven "companions of the Prophet" who died during an Arab raid in the century.
This mausoleum(Hazreti Ömer Türbesi) houses the sarcophagi of a companion of the Prophet Mohammed and six other Arab fighters who died here during a raid against the Byzantines between 647 and 649, and was erected by the Ottomans during their conquest in 1571. According to legend, the seven bodies hastily buried in the 7th century were discovered intact. This "miracle" led to the shrine becoming a major pilgrimage site. It also enabled the Ottomans to legitimize their conquest by asserting that Cyprus was already a land of Islam.
