PALAIOKASTRO BEACH
Large sandy beach in Morphou Bay, 6 km west of Kormakitis, on foot or by 4x4. Sea turtle nesting area.
Known by various names (Παραλία Παλαιόκαστρο/Paralia Palaiokastro, Akdeniz Beach, etc.), this 3.5 km-long stretch of sand in Morphou Bay remains very wild. It's a breeding ground for sea turtles: green and loggerhead turtles come here to lay their eggs from June to September, and the SPOT association (cyprusturtles.org) looks after them. However, due to a lack of maintenance, some areas are covered in garbage. There's a restaurant and, behind the dunes, a campsite (facebook.com/ecocampindigo) and the village of Agia Irini/Akdeniz.
