KANCHUOR CHAPEL
Chapel built in 1356. Part of an Armenian Catholic monastery. Well-preserved. Frescoes recently vandalized.
This Armenian Catholic chapel (St. Mary Kilisesi) was built in 1346. Mary Kilisesi, Εκκλησία Γκαντσβόρ/Ekklisia Gantsvor) was part of the monastery of Appel-de-la-Mère-de-Dieu (Կանչուոր Սուրբ Աստուածածին/Surb Asthvadsatsin Kanchuor in Armenian) founded in the 12th century. Located next to the church of Sainte-Marie-du-Carmel, it is well preserved, but its frescoes have recently been vandalized. Under the Lusignans and Venetians, Famagusta was home to three other Armenian churches, all Orthodox, but destroyed by the Ottomans after 1571.
