NESTORIAN CHURCH
The best-preserved medieval church in town. Built in 1360 for the Nestorians, converted to an Orthodox church in 1905.
This small Gothic building (Nasturi Kilisesi, Νεστοριανική Εκκλησία/Nestorianiki Ekklisia) is Famagusta's best-preserved medieval church. It was founded in 1360 by two Syrian merchants for the Nestorian Christian community, which had emerged from St. John of Acre and was considered heretical. Dedicated to Saint Mary(Mart Maryam in Assyrian), it was converted into a stable after 1571, then into a Greek Orthodox church in 1905. Renamed Agios Georgios tou Exorinos (St. George the Exorcist), it has been reopened for worship since 2013.
