ÉGLISE SAINTE-MARIE-DU-CARMEL
Former Catholic church in ruins, part of a Carmelite monastery founded in 1311. Preserves its walls and apse.
Now in ruins, this former Catholic church (Carmine Kilisesi, Εκκλησία Αγίας Μαρίας των Καρμελιτών/Ekklisia Agias Marias ton Karmeliton) was part of a female monastery of the Carmelite order founded by papal bull in 1311. At 30 m long, it retains its walls in the pared-down style typical of the mendicant orders: a single nave with three bays and a five-sided apse. Recently renovated, it adjoins the Armenian church of the Kanchuor monastery.
