Varosha Orthodox church dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Built in 1960, it houses a museum of icons, closed in 2003.
This large Greek Orthodox church (Ayios Yuannis Kilisesi, Ιερός Ναός Αγίου Ιωάννου του Προδρόμου/Ieros Naos Agios Ioannis tou Prodromou) was built in 1960 for the new Varosha district. Dedicated to St. John the Baptist, it is located in a military zone to which access is forbidden. It does, however, house an "Icon Museum" of some 120 sacred images, which was open from 1995 to 2003. There are no plans to reopen it to visitors.
