KARAOLOS CAMP
Former British camp where 30,000 Jewish Holocaust survivors were interned. Today occupied by two military bases.
It was in this former prison camp (Karaolos Kampı, Καράολος Στρατόπεδο/Karaolos Stratopedo) that 30,000 European Jews rescued from the Holocaust were interned between November 1946 and February 1949. Today occupied by a Turkish military base (to the east of the boulevard) and a UN camp (to the west), Karaolos was created by the British in 1916 for Turkish, then Russian, prisoners of war. The camp is recreated in the film Exodus (1960), starring Paul Newman, which shows how Jews managed to escape from here to Palestine.
