MEDITERRANEAN FILM STUDIOS

Malta Film Studios, also known as Mediterranean Film Studios, is a film production facility located on Malta's east coast, in Il-Kalkara. Since Ridley Scott's Gladiator (2000), it has specialized in maritime and underwater filming, as well as peplums. The site boasts a number of aquatic facilities, including the Shallow Tank, Deep Tank and Insert Tank, which enable scenes to be recreated at sea and underwater. The adjacent Fort Ricasoli and Fort Rinella are also used as backdrops. The site was inaugurated in 1963 and has since played host to numerous films, TV series, commercials and music videos. In 2021, the site was renovated and a new film set built for the German TV series Das Boot. Malta Film Studios is a must-see for film enthusiasts and offers a unique experience in water-based special effects.
