WIGNACOURT TOWER
Located next to the water polo pool (Sirens is Saint Paul's Bay champion in 2001), the tower is high in 1609 under the reign of the Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt. Restored in the 1970 s, it now houses a small historical museum dedicated to military architecture. This military monument is the first of the watch towers built in Malta by the knights of the order of St. John. Only the Tour tower in Gozo is older, but it was destroyed in 1850. These towers were to protect Malta from the rapid incursions during which many Maltese were captured and taken as slaves.
