This Gregorio Bonici Square is also called Cross Square. And it owes its name to a monumental wooden cross which adorns this square and commemorates the resistance of the Maltese against the French troops, in 1798. It was three months after their arrival in Malta that the Maltese revolted against the Napoleonic troops forcing them to take refuge in the fortifications of Cottonera and Valletta. This cross, a war trophy, used to stand in front of the Capuchin convent in Kalkara and was taken to Zeijtun.
