It is the only theater that is located in the same place as a corral de comedias (an ancestor of the theater where spectators sat in balconies arranged around a central stage). Since 1565, artists have been performing in this place in the capital. The present hall was built in 1745. Many great writers, such as Lorca (whose statue is at the entrance of the theater), have presented their plays in this theater. Today, many Spanish plays and foreign classics are performed here.
