Long live San Isidro, the patron saint of Madrid! And the big popular party that's being held for the occasion.
The festivities of San Isidro, patron saint of Madrid, are the most important event of the year for the capital. These festivities are dedicated to a 12th-century labourer, San Isidro Labrador, who is remembered every year on 15 May. On this occasion, the Madrilenians dress in the typical costume of the chulapo and attend concerts, popular dances and fireworks launched from the Retiro Park. It is also customary to eat rosquillas (fritters) flavoured with aniseed or sugar.
