To remember the day when the people of Madrid stood up to Napoleon's troops. Events in the centre of the capital.
The Spaniards began on May 2, 1808 to expel the French invaders from their territory. A founding date that is properly celebrated throughout the Autonomous Community of Madrid, since May 2nd is today the "Dia de la Comunidad" ("Day of the Community"), the regional equivalent of a national holiday. Numerous popular fiestas are organised, mainly in and around the Plaza del 2-May in the Malasaña district. A holiday where every inhabitant of the capital expresses his or her pride in being Madrileños.
