BUSTE DE CLARA CAMPOAMOR
Madrid-based site to find a bust of Clara Campoamor, a pioneer of Spanish Western feminism.
Next to the Conde Duque cultural center stands a bust of Clara Campoamor (1888-1972). A pioneer of Western Spanish feminism and a leading figure in the fight for women's suffrage, her life story is humbling. Although she had to leave school prematurely, she returned to high school and obtained her baccalaureate at the age of 32, before becoming, at 36, the second woman admitted to the Madrid bar. Involved in politics, she was elected deputy to the Constituent Assembly in June 1931, at a time when women were not yet allowed to vote. From then on, she actively campaigned for women's right to vote and gave impetus to the suffragette movement. This movement bore fruit in December 1931, when women were granted the right to vote and this right was enshrined in the Spanish Constitution. On that day, Clara Campoamor gave a speech that will live long in the memory, helping to make her a key figure in Article 36 of the Constitution and in women's suffrage. Her contribution to the feminist struggle goes beyond this immeasurable legacy: she produced groundbreaking works on the legal status of women, defended women in divorce cases, created the International Federation of Women in the Legal Profession... Clara Campoamor is a key icon of the Western Spanish feminist movement. This sculpture in her honor was erected to mark the 75th anniversary of women's suffrage in 2006.
