GALERÍA DE LAS COLECCIONES REALES
Gallery housing a superb collection of tapestries, unique pieces from the Royal Armory, works by Titian...
Inaugurated with great fanfare in June 2023, just a stone's throw from the Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral, the Royal Collections Gallery is a must-see when visiting Madrid. Works by Caravaggio, Velázquez and Goya form part of the immense collection assembled by the Spanish Habsburg and Bourbon dynasties over almost five centuries, and displayed in three superb exhibition rooms. The first, as you enter from the Plaza de la Armería, is that of the Catholic Monarchs. Here you can see a superb collection of tapestries, unique pieces from the Royal Armory, works by Titian, El Greco, Velázquez, Caravaggio and Hieronymus Bosch, to name but a few. The second room features plans of the Royal Palace, built during the reign of Philip V in the 18th century. There are also works by Goya and Tiepolo, as well as period musical instruments and furniture. The third room features much more modern elements, including an immersive cube presenting the various Spanish royal sites. This room also hosts temporary exhibitions and is accessible from the Campo del Moro gardens. This new Madrid museum, in competition with the Prado and Reina Sofia, hopes to become a new must-see in Madrid, attracting as many visitors as the neighboring Royal Palace (almost 1.5 million per year).
