Elliptical square, center of Madrid, kilometer 0 of the Spanish road network and place of the uprising against Napoleon in 1808
It is the real center of Madrid and the zero kilometer of the Spanish road network. Until 1570, the Puerta del Sol was outside the city walls. It seems that the name of the square comes from a sun carved on the door of what was then the city wall and which remained so until the 16th century. The square has an elliptical shape and ten streets meet there. At the beginning of Calle Preciados, the bear and the arbutus tree, emblems of the capital, remind us that in the past the city was surrounded by large areas. On May 2, 1808, the uprising against Napoleon took place here.
