ALKALI PUERTA
One of the five ancient gates to the city, northwest of Retiro Park, known as the authentic gate of Madrid
To the northwest of Retiro Park, the Puerta de Alcalá, under restoration until 2023, was one of the five ancient gates that gave access to Madrid. In ancient times, this location marked the entrance to the city from Aragon. In 1778, Carlos III decided to build a majestic gate and appointed Sabatini to build the five-arched gate. At that time, steel gates closed the access to the city. It is often referred to as the "authentic gateway to Madrid" and takes its name from the name of the road connecting Madrid to Alcalá de Henares.
