Joseph Bonaparte, the brother of Napoleon, is the first to project the construction of this place. In 1841, it was completed, similar to today's. The statues of the Spanish kings found there were intended to decorate the façade of the Royal Palace, but their weight proved excessive and dangerous. The equestrian statue of Philippe IV, in the centre of the square, was made according to a drawing by Velázquez. The horse stands on the back legs, which has posed a real technical problem because of the 9 tons of bronze that make it up.

Une place colorée
Belle place colorée juste en face du palais royal. Idéal pour faire une pause après la visite du palais ou de la cathédrale.

Elle mérite plus qu'un passage rapide en direction du palais royal, impressionnante statue avec ce cheval tenu par ses seules jambes arrières et les nombreuses statues qui auraient du orner le palais royal mais qui étaient trop lourdes et menaçaient le bâtiment

Si vous faites la visite du palais royal vous traverserez cette place située à proximité, à remarquer les très beaux appartements et bâtiments sur le pourtour, et son parc ombragé pour se reposer.

This place is famous in Madrid because it is not only the place or rises Royal Palace but there are also almudena and the opéra just next door. This place with something spiritual and gives me a feeling of peace despite the of alba of tourists that photos Royal Palace. It was able to me several to sit on a bench and simply to see people who pass.
You can tour of this square is will find you statues of kings Visigoth (or almost) who ruled Spain before the muslim conquest. Little remains of this time visigoth, with the re-use of materials by the invaders to surely rebuild other remains.
