About 20 km from downtown Funchal. Madeira airport is famous for its impressive landings, sometimes disrupted by powerful gusts of wind. Nestled between mountain and ocean, the runway is partly supported by a huge forest of reinforced concrete pillars (180 in all!). This is a modern, eco-responsible airport. All car rental agencies have a counter on site. There's also a tourist office.

Cet aéroport est une curiosité touristique en soit : une bonne partie de la piste est construite sur pilotis, tout au bord de la mer!Par grand vent, on apprécie le talent des pilotes de la TAP! Les principales compagnies de location de voiture ont leur comptoir au niveau "Arrivées"

Malgré un atterrissage houleux et la fermeture de l'aéroport suite à de vents violents, chouette aéroport.
Ne loupez pas l’atterrissage des avions depuis la plateforme permettant de sortir quand vous repartez en France.
Et le passage en voiture sous l'aéroport, à travers les piliers pour aller en direction de la pointe St LAURENT, vaut vraiment le coup d'oeil. Impressionnant!
