Every year on the May the city of Funchal pays homage to St. James the Minor, its patron saint.

Every year, on the first of May, the city of Funchal celebrates its patron saint, São Tiago Menor. A big procession is organized in the heart of the old town, in the rua Santa Maria. It goes up to the small church of Santa Maria Maior, proudly standing in front of the ocean. In 1538, the saint is said to have granted the Madeirans' wish by sounding the death knell of a dreadful cholera epidemic. The islanders continue to celebrate this miracle every year at the Church of Socorro. Various animations accompany the festivities.
