In the spring, Funchal transforms itself into a grandiose floral show. It is the long awaited Flower Festival.
An ode to spring, the Flower Festival is one of the most important festivities in the Madeiran calendar. Firstly, because of its duration (1 month), its success and because it celebrates Madeira's exuberant floral heritage. It begins with the raising of the Wall of Hope: children parade around and place their flowers to form a monumental floral work of art. Carpets of flowers cover the sidewalks, and the island's finest flowers are displayed all over the street. The festival culminates on Sunday with the grand allegorical procession, an explosion of color!
