QUINTA DA PALMEIRA
This residence with its sumptuous garden was built in 1763 by Captain Camara, the guardian of the bay of Funchal. It belongs to Henrique Jaime Welsh, a descendant of Harry Hinton, the first owner of the house. It is a haven of peace with an aviary of birds, a pond of water lilies, next to a banana plantation, in the middle of centennial trees, avocado trees, exotic flowers or eggplants. In the gardens, a double-arched window in Manueline style probably adorned João Esmeraldo's building, the Casa Esmeraldo, where Christopher Columbus is said to have lived.
