MUSEU A CIDADE DO AÇÚCAR
Flemish merchant Jeanim Esmerandt landed on Madeira in the 15th century to produce and trade sugar. It turned out to be a lucrative business! The "City of Sugar" museum displays artefacts unearthed by archaeologists in 1989 during excavations in the foundations of the Flemish merchant's former home (which stood in Place Colomb). Sugar loaves (a type of sugar mold), Indo-Portuguese furniture, Japanese earthenware... We'd have liked to learn a little more about the history of the sugar era, but that's not what the museum is about.
