BORDAL - BORDADOS DA MADEIRA
A visit to this workshop-boutique is an excellent way to learn more about the art of embroidery, which has been practiced in Madeira since its settlement. However, it was not until the second half of the 19th century that these finely crafted works went from being a product for domestic use and consumption to a sought-after commodity valued abroad. The Bordal house, opened in 1963, reveals a remarkable know-how, between tradition and innovation. An embroiderer in traditional dress will undoubtedly welcome you at the entrance of the house. You will then discover the old store, located on the second floor, then the manufacturing workshops, located on the upper floor (free guided tours are offered during the week). It is here that you will discover the secrets of step by step manufacturing (sketch on tracing paper, perforation, indigo blue coloring, sewing, embroidery, washing...) of these unique pieces. The embroidery itself is done at the home of the embroiderers. It will then be certified by a seal affixed by the Institute of Embroidery. The materials used are linen, organza and cotton. Among the many creations, the men's, women's and children's wardrobe, tablecloths, towels, bedding items, all made to measure. You can also fall in love with the beautifully embroidered lavender bags. Another store is located in front of the Government Palace on Avenida do Infante (26B).
