This great procession organised in honour of the Virgin of Monte attracts thousands of believers and visitors every year.

Pilgrims flock to Funchal to pay homage to Madeira's patron saint, Our Lady of Monte. On August 14th a large procession in honour of the venerable Virgin converges on the church of Monte where mass is celebrated. Although it is one of the most significant religious gatherings in the Madeira calendar, folk songs and music exalt the joy and good humour of the faithful in an atmosphere of village festivities.
