APOLLO CAFÉ
In the city centre, opposite the steps leading to the church, is this bar, well known to the locals. Above the front door, there is a wooden sign whose paint letters, supposedly announcing the establishment, have disappeared. This establishment, opened 50 years ago by a Madeiraian who returned home after emigrating, excels in a very local specialty: la poncha! In all its variants (orange/lemon, passion fruit, mint, Cayenne Pitanga cherry, the mandarin one is essential and the smart one can easily tell you, after tasting several, that it is probably the best of all those produced in Madeira. A must that is worth a visit: "poncha de tangerina". Special mention for the coffee machine; a very rare piece that seems to have come out of Jules Verne's stories.
