To the east of Santa Maria, the Ribeira da Janela region is a great place for hiking, particularly along the Ribeira da Janela levada. From Lamaceiros, it winds its way through the gorges of the island's longest river, taking in magnificent terraced fields (23 km, approx. 8 hrs for the full hike). For a shorter walk, opt for the vereda das Contreiras (approx. 1 hr) or the vereda da Ribeira Funda (approx. 2 hrs).
