IGREJA SENHOR BOM JESUS
Every first Sunday in September this church receives one of Madeira's oldest pilgrimages, the Arraial do Senhor Bom Jesus da Ponta Delgada. Built in the 16th century on the spot where a famous miraculous crucifix is said to have washed up, it houses a recent naive ceiling decorated with biblical and historical scenes, a carved gilded wooden altarpiece and a Baroque style sacristy. The fishing scenes painted on the ceiling evoke the legendary discovery of the famous crucifix by a fisherman, a relic that still attracts many pilgrims today.
