FESTA DO SENHOR DOS MILAGRES

It is undoubtedly the most important pilgrimage of the archipelago and perhaps also the most solemn! It is held in early October in the municipality of Machico, east of Madeira. The Feast of the Lord of Miracles commemorates the flood of 9th October 1803, during which the statue of Senhor dos Milagres was washed away by the waves and reappeared three days later. A large procession, lit by torches and candles, takes place to the chapel of Senhor dos Milagres.
