The cleft takes its name from Dona Beja, a mythical figure in local tradition, a beautiful woman who used to come here to meditate and escape prying eyes. It's true that this cave carved into the rocky cliffs to the east of Porto Santo is a haven of peace seldom visited by tourists. To get there, preferably at low tide, you'll need good shoes. A sandy path leads from Porto de Frades beach. It offers superb views of the ocean before reaching the canyon after a short final climb.
