ATAC is Rome's public transport company. Buses often run late (the fault of Rome's traffic jams!), while the metro works quite well but doesn't serve the whole city - there are only three lines. In the historic center, walk whenever possible. The ATAC website provides maps and a route planner. Applications such as Moovit are also very useful, providing real-time timetables.

Uhm what to say ? I live in Rome for thirty years 20 years ago and the public transportation was old and crowded. It did not change too much. It IS Lost in the traffic, it can be packed and i am doubtful that all People pay the ticket. Difficult to i prove, full of debt...

Special recommendation for 2 electric shuttles 116 and 117 which crosses the city (the Vatican to the villa Borghese and Place del Popolo au Colisée) through the streets of the historic centre. Rate is from €1.50 for a trip. and you can make a nice inner loop. Advice, you stud: the Roman streets are renowned for their paving stones! then a little shakes! but it is very nice!
RQ: for the plans, just before them download on the website of the atac. It is necessary to make a little effort for in the way of each line, but that is done without too much trouble! the stops from these shuttles are not very visible in some places (small bollards of dark green).
Disappointed by public transport in Rome, plan very difficult to know what a attractive line where!
There is a valid ticket 3 days on the underground railway network and bus for 11th. If you runs not bad, is a have quite quickly... .
